Images
Computer-generated images, mostly made with Pov-Ray, a free renering application that incorporates a programming language. Most of this work was done in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s and to some extent the quality of the work reflects limitations of the available technology.
Infolds
This series is computationally generated using AI algorithms, specifically a customized genetic search. I did a 3D print of one of these, but sadly that revealed structural limitations due to gravity. Creating something like this as a physical work requires a transparent material to provide support.
Infolds 1 (White)
A convoluted path created by a customized genetic search algorithm, then rendered with Pov-Ray.
Infolds 1 (Glass)
A convoluted path within a rectangular prism, rendered in glass. The path was created by a customized genetic search algorithm, then rendered with Pov-Ray.
Architecture and Design
Architecture has always been a great personal interest, so naturally I’ve rendered a few ideas over the years.
Graystone Office
In 1993 I was living in a rented house with not much space and a huge back yard. I fantasized about adding a working office to the back of the house and creating a partial courtyard for barbecues and summer parties.
Ravine House
One of many attempts to render a design I came up with for a large house built on the slope of a ravine. I’m pretty sure it will never be finished.
Mississauga Tower (Aerial View)
This is a ground level view of a residential tower. The tower features several levels of greenhouse, so that residents can produce food.

Mixed Use Building
A rough concept rendering for a mixed commercial/residential building. Ground floor is retail, second floor offices. The third floor features a pedestrian street and is mixed use. Higher floors are residential.
San Francisco 2327AD
A mostly incomplete entry for the IRTC. Blocks of apartments in geostationary orbit over the San Francisco Bay area. Missing elements: Lots of traffic, roof detail, better lighting…
Office Desk
My perfect desk: Lots of surface area, and two levels, so cables don’t hang down, and so I have a place to stuff the clutter.
Others
Various ideas and experiments.
Coins (white)
This is the model for the gold coins, Generating a random stack of coins is harder than it seems.
Coins (Gold)
Originally done as an illustration for a presentation (with different text). Gold is a very difficult material to render well.
Toy Blocks (White)
Toy blocks done in shades of grey instead of colour. This really shows off the effect of radiosity computations
Toy Blocks (Colour)
A high quality rendering of some toy blocks. Radiosity has been turned on to get a more realistic image.
Microphone head
There’s something iconic about microphones. This stylized version is still one of my favourites.
Earth in Orbit
A depiction of the speed of our planet in orbit. Mostly an experiment in using Pov-Ray’s atmospheric effects.
Earth Time
One of the most fun things about raytracing is that you can make images that mix photorealism and fantasy.
